One of the great joys of working as a photographer is the unique perspectives we get to witness during our careers.
Be it sharing in life's big moments such as weddings, births or milestones. Or visually recording and meeting, top international musicians and performers on a daily basis.
Or recording a small slice-of-life moment that you can then see develop into something magical. This is just one of those, literally little moments that has become quite unbelievable. In 1997 when I was working in Calgary I photographed two-year-old Hunter Shinkaruk on the ice at the Olympic Saddledome.
It was a cute, iconic shot of the little guy with the big boys of the Calgary Hitmen WHL team. The photo struck a cord with people and it ended up being published around the world, including in Life magazine. The photo also won the National Newspaper Award, (Canada's top journalism award) in the Feature Photography category that year.
Well, Hunter who could barely even talk but already had a wicked slap shot at two-years-old, was just drafted in the first round of the NHL draft, 24th overall by the Vancouver Canucks. The odds are just staggering but it has happened.
So if all goes well we will see Hunter playing for the Canucks in a year or two, quite amazing. Congrats to Hunter!
