Snow much fun!

A mass production of man made snow has greeted Lambton College students during the first few weeks of January. The fabrication went on for days and soon there was a gigantic heap of snow, ready for something.  I asked around the campus looking for someone to shed light on to the reason behind the snow manufacturing and no seemed to know.  I thought to myself that maybe we were offering a new course on campus, Snow Making 101.  

On January 22, the reason behind the snow mountain was made clear to us.  Lambton College has partnered with Boarder Pass Canada to make a unique opportunity for the people of Sarnia and surrounding areas, included with a tow rope, snow hills and a lot of fun.

Tim Nixon, co-owner of Boarder Pass Canada, has chosen Lambton College to be the home of the Ontario’s first snow boarding cable park located on a college campus.  Tim made it clear that no experience is needed to use the park.  

If you are new to snowboarding or want to brush up on your skills before heading out to the big hills, this is the place to come.  Tim mentioned that lessons are available to those who want to learn a few new tips and use of the park is free to Lambton College students from Monday through Wednesday.

On that Thursday morning our photography teacher Dave Chidley, excitedly came into our photography class and said, “Grab your cameras and let’s get outside and practise our decisive moment, composition and journalism techniques.”  

Braving the sub-zero temperatures, we participated in the grand opening festivities that were being held just outside our class room door.   

Below are some of the pictures from that morning. The most exciting moment for me was when Dave Ouellette project manager of Boarder Pass Canada, demonstrated his skills on the snow board; he made a jump high enough that I was able to capture him in mid air.

Dave Sandford, Guest Speaker

The Lambton College Digital Photography classes were treated to a special guest in our on-going guest speaker "In the Studio" series.

Faculty member Dave Chidley interviewed Sandford and we had an extensive question and answer session.

We were wowed by Dave Sandford's wide range of subjects, mostly from the world of sports.   From the Stanley Cup Finals, to football, to the Olympics to wake-boarding Sandford's unique approach and style come through in the images.

Social media promotion, building bridges with clients and working with elite athlete stories gave the students a glimpse of how a busy full-time professional is working in the market today.


Discussion on his education, the steps required to reach his goals, and the work necessary, educated us all on the dedication required for success.  Sandford uses specialized equipment, to achieve images from inside a NHL goalie net, while being towed by a wake-boarding boat or hanging out in a hot-air balloon.   He uses studio strobe lighting to illuminate hockey rinks to achieve the best quality possible.  He shared details on of the many technical challenges he faces.

Thanks to Dave Sanford for giving his time and sharing so many great stories about his career!  The educational experience was a tremendous bonus to our students.
