Not My First Rodeo

By: Jessica Dillon Mallory

Our time here in the Digital Photography program at Lambton College has almost come to
an end. But it's only March you say? Well trust me, the next few weeks are going to be
gone before we know it. The journey has been absolutely unforgettable thus far and I have
been fortunate enough to have many unforgettable experience throughout my life to
compare.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Jessica, and I am an addict... to learning that is. I like
to consider myself a professional student, but the pay hasn't been the greatest. As you may
guess, this is not my first time enrolled in a college program; my first time at Lambton
College, yes. My education history is one to be awed. I am pretty sure I could have almost
been a doctor twice over by now, but where would the fun in that be? I'm sure my parents
would have loved to have had a doctor in the family. Don't they all dream of that? My
problem is making up my mind. You know deciding what it is I want to be when I grow up.
I always believed I was going to be living my ultimate dream, sailing the south, scuba diving
and exploring tropical islands all while being paid to do so. I know, how great would that
have been! Well... things happen and you adapt. You grow and continue on. I love my life
and family and wouldn't change it for anything. At almost 32 years of age, a loving husband
and an amazing 10 year old daughter later, I believe I may have finally found my calling.

I always enjoyed photography growing up and used a camera to document my adventures.
Unfortunately it was always a hit or miss with my photos. Sometimes I got lucky and had
something I could be proud of. Most of the time they were a complete fail. This program
has really reintroduced me to my love of photography and allowed me to hone my skills
and build on them. Now I can consistently produce a product that I am proud of. It is quite
the greatest feeling. The staff are like nothing that I have ever experienced before. I have
never met a more caring and supporting staff. They are your biggest fans and want to see
nothing more than you succeed. It is that support that really drives you to do your best,
take chances and get out of your comfort zone to try new things and push the limits of your
creativity.

The Digital Photography Program at Lambton College, not only builds your photography
skills, but also provides you with a well rounded education to help you succeed in the
business of photography. Just taking a pretty picture will not make you successful in an
industry that is cut throat. I'm not saying this to scare you, but it is reality and you have to
understand this and be willing to do great things. What will make you stand out against the
person next to you? Our instructors help you figure out who you want to be in the
photography game and where you want to go. They know what it is like in the industry
since they are still working it. Just another reason I have loved my time here. You really
get a hands on experience of what it is like to work as a professional photographer. You
have the ability to explore the different niches in the photography world and discover what
you enjoy the most. The space and equipment you have access to is simply amazing in
assisting you in fulfilling your goals. I can honestly say when this semester is finished, I will
be confident in who I am and what I will be doing with my own photography career.

Over the past year and a half, I have met a group of people that I know I can count on if I
need them. We have really grown into more of a family than just classmates. It is just so
much more than that. Another adventure added to the books. So now I leave you with my
most favourite quote:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do
than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

-Mark Twain

The Quest For Something Greater

"Bisi" on the road early in NYC for a great day of photography.

It was a beautiful sunny day; I had gone with my friend to the sport arena of my university - Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria: which also doubles as the photo centre of the whole school.

Students do go there after a long day to take some photos, with one of the several photo booth operators trying to get you to take your portrait with them. I had never been a fan of going there to take pictures as I was always put off by the awkward way we were told to pose by the supposedly pro photographers - to them it was a source of livelihood and not a medium of artistic expression.

As I stood with my friend observing the beautiful vista/ landscape that surrounds the area, I was captivated by the artistic splendour of the deep blue sky and its blend with the vibrant green vegetation.

I was lost in my own little world, and I wasn’t aware of the activities going on around me. I kept staring; I wanted that moment to last forever. I had to whisper to my friend who had dragged me there to lend me his phone so I could use its camera to keep this beauty I just discovered with me. Little did I know that this was going to be the beginning of a quest for something greater.

From that day forth, my attention was always drawn to the sky; the feeling could only be compared to when you just get a new car and go out the next day and you seem to see the car everywhere. I discovered a new life, a new passion and a new experience.

Eight years later, I found myself studying for a diploma in photography in a country over 10,000 kilometres from my home country: I embarked on not just a journey but an adventure - the story of the photo of the sky just keeps unfolding. Here I am in a class where I stand out like a brown egg in the midst of white eggs. The feeling was exhilarating and I was open to learn and meet new people.

Over the course of my 2 years at Lambton College studying Digital Photography, I have had a rewarding experience: from the people I have met, to the person I have become, and the skills I have learnt and developed. Being a people person, I have come to value the importance of relationship.

My class has become a safe haven, which I can call home. I am inspired by how much each individual has developed and grown fond of one another. I have come to admire how each of our strengths and weaknesses makes a rhythm that flows seamlessly. We have learnt from one another not just the skills and art of photography but the attitude to forge ahead TOGETHER. Sometimes I wonder what it will be like when we finish our school year.

The past 2 years of my life have really begun a defining moment in my photography journey. I eagerly look forward to what the future holds for each one of us. I see an army of talented and passionate photographers that will make a difference with their God-given talent and learnt skills. There is an adage in Nigeria that says “20 children can’t plays together for 20 years”. When the drum rolls and we all go our separate ways I know that each passing day I (WE) will be reminded of how far I (WE) have come…

Elizabeth Bosma - Award winner!

Elizabeth Bosma, College Honourable Mention winner
Photographer's Forum Magazine competition.
Elizabeth Bosma, (one of our Second Year students) has been recognized in the Nikon sponsored 35th  Annual Photographer's Forum Magazine image competition.  Out of 17000 (Seventeen Thousand!!!) images from around the world, Elizabeth was chosen as one of the College Honourable Mentions from the finalist selection group!

Her photo will be published in the May 2015 issue of Photographer's Forum Magazine and in a hard-cover Best of College & High School Photography 2015 book.

The photograph of a Peddle Cab driver relaxing in the morning light was created in October on a Lambton College Digital Photography Field Study trip to New York City for all the second year students.

"The photo, was taken in Central Park and it was one of those unique moments, the way the light and simplicity of it came together." says Bosma.  She added that "I'm really surprised and and proud to have been selected"

Elizabeth (or Els for short) added that "the trip and (Lambton Digital Photography) program has helped me to build my confidence and be more open about my work"

According to the Program Co-ordinator Richard Beland, "One of the things that I’m most proud of with Els, and if I may, with all of our students, is that there is a traceable growth through First into Second Year showing the successful learning of technical and photojournalistic skills that are subsequently being used to tell interesting and creative stories."

He adds "The fact that Els has been recognized is an indication of many things, most notably, that Els’ consistent hard work as a student has earned her this well-deserved rank. It only stands to reason that she has a bright future to look forward to."

Congratulations Elizabeth!

Lambton College student Geri Freeborn was also chosen as a finalist in 2013.

Lambton College’s Digital Photography program offering $500 memorial entrance award to an incoming student

Students entering Lambton College’s Digital Photography program will have the opportunity to compete for a $500 entrance award at the College’s annual Open House taking place on Saturday, March 28.
The Geri Freeborn Memorial Entrance Award was created by program faculty in honour of a former Digital Photography student who passed away suddenly in January 2013. At age 57, Freeborn was the oldest student to enroll in the College’s Digital Photography program. She has been remembered as a hard working student who was creatively driven. In fact, a month after her passing, faculty were advised that one of her photographs had been selected as a finalist in a national competition that garnered 17,000 entries.
Program faculty are hoping to honour Freeborn’s memory by granting this award to a student who demonstrates that same creative promise.
Students who have enrolled in the Digital Photography program for September 2015 will have the opportunity to present their photography portfolio in person to program faculty during Open House. Each student will be allowed to present a minimum of six (maximum of 12) photographs for review. In addition to being judged based on their eye for creativity and their craft, students must also demonstrate a passion for photography.
Photos can be presented in electronic or print format. If being presented in an electronic format, photos must be presented on a laptop computer, tablet, or loaded onto a memory stick (smartphones are not permitted). All images must be high resolution quality and jpeg format.
Portfolio viewings will be held during the Lambton College Open House on Saturday, March 28, which takes place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  A tour of the photo studio and a presentation of the program will be held at both 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. with portfolio presentations to follow each tour.
Interested applicants can register a portfolio viewing for either time slot by contacting Richard Beland, Program Coordinator at richard.beland@lambtoncollege.ca.
Select spots still remain in Lambton College’s Digital Photography program for September 2015. For more information, please visit lambtoncollege.ca/phtd or stop by the College’s annual Open House on Saturday March 28 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to chat with students and faculty and learn more about the program.
