A Line of Galleries, Day 2

Editor's note: The second-year Lambton College Digital Photography students are on a five-day work study visit to New York City.  Follow our daily blog about the adventure.  Each day, two students will share their thoughts on the experience.  Please join us as we experience New York City.

With day one complete, day two started with a bang! We grabbed our cameras,
backpacks, transit passes and headed down to the subway. It was a beautiful sunny day which made strolling down 39th Avenue a grand ole time. Our first destination: St. Patrick’s Cathedral!

We spent some time explore the amazing architecture both inside and out of this
massive cathedral. Construction began in 1858 and took just over 20 years to complete; it  opened to the public in 1879. The cathedral has since then been declared a national Historic
Landmark and has become an iconic tourist attraction in New York. It’s a calm and quiet
place amongst the bustling crowds of this busy city. We enjoyed taking the time to capture the incredible structure: from the exquisite stain glass windows to the elegant stone pillars.

After our visit at St. Patricks Cathedral, we took our time wandering and photographing
the streets as we made our way to High Line Park and Chelsea Market. What used to be an
industrial railroad has been repurposed into an elevated public park. It provides amazing views of the streets, giving us photographers many opportunities to capture some unique perspectives.

Around lunch time we were giving some free time to explore the Chelsea Market. This market gave us a great cultural experience as there were many shops, cafes and delis to see.

Following our pit stop for lunch we continued along through High Line Park as we made
our way to more inspiring galleries such as the Benrubi Gallery, Robert Mann Gallery, Aperture Gallery and the Morrison Hotel Gallery. Each of these galleries were interesting and unique in their own ways; inspiring us to pursue our goals in photography.

We ended our day with classic dining at Lombardi’s Pizza. We shared our adventures of the
day before heading back to catch some “shutter” eye (lame pun intended), before we once
again hit the streets of New York.

That’s a wrap folks, take 3 tomorrow!!
