Bright eyed and bushy tailed we headed to London International Airport to catch our 6:30am flight. With tons of gear and ponchos packed in anticipation of rain, we could not contain our excitement. With a quick changeover in Toronto, we arrived in New York at 11:00am and hit the ground running.
As soon as we got there, everyone was overwhelmed by the constant fear that we would get separated. On the subway, we were serenaded by a Spanish performer which grabbed the attention of many students.
Our first stop was at the Premier Deli Café for a quick lunch break where we were greeted by Nikoo, a former student who had to relocate to New Jersey.
Nearby the Hudson River, we were immersed in the culture of the Chelsea area where at one time the Algonquin Indians traded their game and crops. We walked through High Line Park, a re-purposed elevated railway line, which had great views across the city and was packed with lots of interesting people.
After exploring the High Line Park, we visited the Aperture Gallery which featured works by Alex Webb, whose images highlighted photographs taken of the Mexican culture; giving us a unique look in to street photography and international culture. There were also many photography books to browse through at the gallery and students were able to take a short rest.
We finished off the night on a high note and headed up to The Top of The Rock, to photograph the sunset and skyline. It was a challenge with everyone trying to get shots of the skyline, but we created some memorable images. We all enjoyed magical time watching the sun set over NYC on our first day!
Soon after, we headed for dinner at the bottom of the Rockefeller Plaza.
After a busy day of travel and touring the city, we traveled back to our hotel in Queen's (Long Island City) to edit our photos, write the blog, and get a few hours of sleep to prepare for our first full day in NYC.
