Memories Made

Editor's note: The second-year Lambton College Digital Photography students are now home from a five-day work study visit to New York City.  Follow our daily blog about the adventure.  Each day, two students will share their thoughts on the experience.  Please join us as we experience New York City.

         A year ago most of us didn’t even know each other; now in our second year many friendships have formed and blossomed.  Taking this trip to New York only strengthened the bonds that have been made.  Looking back on the last six days in New York, it’s hard to just pick one great memory or event to reflect on.

         Most of us made our way into Detroit to stay at the La Quinta hotel on the sixth of October, in the effort to be able to get some sleep for the great adventure we would be embarking on the next morning.  Five am came rather early as most stayed up rather late chit chatting and sharing the excitement for the coming week.  Some arrived early and grabbed some dinner, while others showed up with little time left to sleep let alone join in on the dinner date.  Little did we know that we could all run on minimal sleep and lots of adrenaline to get us through the next few days.  With one last message from our teachers to be down in the lobby for five thirty am to catch the shuttle to the airport, many of us drifted off with sweet dreams of New York.  

         The flight was a first for some but there was no lack of support from fellow classmates, explaining how everything would happen, what to do and where we would need to be, along with encouragement to help settle some nerves.  It was uplifting to hear all the encouragement that everyone had to offer to each other.

         Quickly little groups were formed and friendships strengthened. We quickly learned that we needed one another more than we thought to navigate in and around the streets of New York.  Whether it was helping one another carry luggage or bags, stand watch for someone who stopped to take a photo, or just have an understanding for someone when they needed a break, we all became a stronger “family”.  The subway in itself was a new adventure for many, and we truly depended on each other to ensure no one was left behind.  We also learned it took a lot of team work to navigate through the subway terminals and decipher in which direction, uptown or downtown, that we would be heading.

         While on the subway, along with the walks to destinations and the standing around during breaks, many giggles, stories, frustrations and selfies were shared but most of all memories of a lifetime made.  If you were to ask any one of us, we could tell you about the subway entertainment, laugh about catching the wrong train or justtell a genuine story about how we shared this adventure with a friend and got to see something new.

         Some say that family is blood; others say that family are the ones that are there for you when you need it. We all needed each other this week and we all pulled our weight to be there for one another.   This is our DPH family and they have helped us through some good times and some bad, helped with projects, understanding and of course getting through navigating the big apple.  These are the memories made, whether they were laughter on the subway after a long day heading back to the hotel or just hanging out in our room on the day off, these are the moments that will be cherished and remembered for a lifetime. We may not remember everything we did on this trip as time goes by, but we will remember the moments and individuals that made us feel happy. While we said goodbye to New York, we will always reflect on this adventure and truly look back with grateful hearts for everything this adventure has taught and given us.
